Located on the Adelaide Plains between Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide is home to around 1.47 million people. This number makes it the country’s fifth-largest city.
Adelaide was first formed as a free settlement in 1836. It became a distinct community since most of its neighbours were convict colonies. The city got its name from Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV.
The city is currently highlighted by its colonial roots, complemented by a modern food, art, and festival culture, earning it the nickname “Festival City.”
Long before European arrival, the Kaurna people managed the plains of what is now Adelaide, living in family groups on land they called Tarndanya (“place of the red kangaroo”). In 1836, Colonel William Light surveyed and laid out the city with wide boulevards and surrounding parklands, a design known as Light’s Vision that still shapes Adelaide’s layout today.
As a free colony, Adelaide attracted settlers seeking religious freedom and civil liberties. By the mid-19th century, copper discoveries at Burra and the growth of agriculture fuelled rapid expansion, followed by waves of migrants who enriched the city’s cultural tapestry.
Adelaide features an idyllic Mediterranean climate. This means the city experiences hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when rainfall is low and the temperature sits comfortably in the mid-20s Celsius. If you’re a wine lover, late summer (February–March) brings vintage festivities in McLaren Vale and the Barossa. For festival fans, March is a highlight month, hosting both the Adelaide Fringe and WOMADelaide.
Perched on gently sloping terrain, Adelaide stretches about 20 km from the shoreline to the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges and 96 km from Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south. The River Torrens meanders through the city centre, dividing North Adelaide from the CBD before emptying into Gulf St Vincent. The Adelaide region covers 5,350 km² and includes metropolitan suburbs, the Northern Adelaide Plains, and the Western Mount Lofty Ranges—a patchwork of vineyards, conservation parks, and rural towns.
With its perfect blend of city sophistication and easy access to natural wonders, Adelaide stands ready to welcome you. Pack your hat, your appetite, and your sense of adventure—you’re about to discover why South Australia’s capital is one of the country’s best-kept secrets.
